I was surprised by this book. I started it last week as I was waiting for you guys to arrive on Saturday. I picked it up and recommended that we use it for our first book because it has been so wildly popular. I read about 50 pages before Jackie arrived and was a little dissappointed. The back of the book told me that Edward was a vampire and that the main character was in love with him. Thus, when Bella started school in Forks and was struck by a group of incredibly attractive, strangely not hungry teenagers, I suffered very little suspense as to what they were. I think that even without the back cover I would have realized what was up, I can't really believe that no one else really notices. But hey, there has to be some suspension of reality for it to work at all.
After 5 chapters however, my opinion has changed. The writing is not the best I've ever read but that may be because I just read Pride and Prejudice. But I have become vested in the action of the book. I want to know what is going to happen next. It has been a long time since I read a book where I simply could not put it down; I can read 100 or more pages without realizing it.
The storyline certainly intrigues me. I don't know if either of you ever read or heard of the series The Year Of The Cat. This is a trilogy about teenagers who can transform into panthers. They are shapeshifters. A young girl moves into a new town, also in Washington state by the way, and is immediately attracted to a very good looking boy. They fall in love, realizing that they are soulmates who have followed each other through multiple past lives. The series follows the girl as she gets into this "coven" and as she decides to pull back out. I'm interested in following the Twilight series to see if there will be any further parallels. Also, the girl has some feelings for another boy, who is normal and becomes her lifeline to her human nature. Hmmm....
I like Edward. He seems very intelligent and seems to really care about Bella. How will it end though? Will Bella find out that he is truly evil and try to leave? Or can they really be good vampires? How can Bella be with him though? She will grow old and he will stay 17... I am looking forward to finding out what will happen next.
Still reading and still unable to stop. Will add more soon.

It's too bad my copy hasn't come in from the library yet. I've finished two books while waiting... I'm ready to start another and still no phone call from my public library. I am interested to read Twilight, especially after reading a book about faeries. I'm not a huge fan of vampires, but I'm willing to give it a try.
dena - i could mail you my copy. you would get it in a few days if you want. let me know and i can drop it in the mail tomorrow.
Thanks for the thought. The library is free though. Eventually they'll come through for me. But I'm thinking we should pick our next book now so I can request it and have it here on time...
I've got other books I can start in the meantime, a whole shelf of unread mysteries. I'll keep you informed on the progress of acquiring the book.
